Diction Primers

Cannon has prepared single-page diction primers for various languages. These are based on articles, advice from native speakers, and personal observations. They limit to matters dealing with the sung language, rather than when spoken.

Spoken Text Files

These audio files are intended for singers not familiar with diction rules for each work's language. Texts are usually for choral parts only. Please note that your conductor may prefer a different approach.

All files are spoken by Gary D. Cannon unless otherwise indicated.

Johannes Brahms: Ein deutsches Requiem

Johannes Brahms: Liebeslieder Walzer

Fauré: Cantique de Jean Racine

Morten Lauridsen: Madrigali: Six "Fire Songs"

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 3

Jaakko Mäntyjärvi: Canticum calamitatis maritimae

Carl Orff: Carmina Burana
These files use twelfth-century Germanic Latin, which is different than modern Germanic Latin. Check with your conductor to confirm whether these files apply to your situation.

Francis Poulenc: Un soir de neige

Camille Saint-Saëns: Oratorio de Noël
